Cambodia awaits UN response on Khmer Rouge trial
The Cambodian government says that a United Nations-backed tribunal of surviving Khmer Rouge leaders is still possible and dependent upon a UN response to its latest offer.
Head of the government's task force for the trial, Sok An, says the doors for negotiations are still open, both from Cambodia and the UN.
He says it's too early to say whether efforts to try the ultra-Maoists for the deaths of 1.7 million people with U-N involvement, is at a stalemate.
Last Friday, Cambodia moved to entice the U-N back into a trial of surviving Khmer Rouge leaders saying local legislation would not override a deal with the U-N.
On February 8th, the U-N stunned Cambodia by pulling out of the trial, citing Phnom Penh's inability to hold impartial hearings of the Khmer Rouge heirarchy blamed for the genocide during their 1975-79 rule.
