Malaysian government lawyers defend Anwar's conviction
Government lawyers in Malaysia have started their arguments in the appeal by former deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, against his corruption conviction.
The lawyers say they are likely to take three days in their defence of the prosecution case in the Federal Court, the country's highest.
They say Anwar's allegations he had an unfair trial are not valid, as there had been overwhelming evidence he abused his power to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct.
Lawyers for Anwar, who was heir apparent to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad before being sacked in September, 1998, completed their submissions on Tuesday.
He is also serving nine years jail for a sodomy conviction, which will be the subject of a separate appeal.
