Rainstorms destroy crops in North Korea's eastern provinces
Rainstorms have reportedly caused severe damage to crops and homes in North Korea's eastern provinces, adding to concern about the country's food crisis.
South Korea's Yonhap news, quoting the North's state-run Central Broadcast, said two days of rain and hailstorms battered coastal areas last week in the North's Kangwon and South Hamkyong provinces. It said tens of thousands of homes and vast areas of farmland were inundated in the northeastern port of Wonsan and nearby areas.
The famine-hit North has been struck by a prolonged drought in the spring and heavy rains in the summer.
International agencies had forecast a worse than usual grain harvest for North Korea this year.
