Cambodia's Hun Sen to seek extended jail term for Ta Mok
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen says he'll ask parliament to extend the period allowed for the detention of Khmer Rouge leader Ta Mok who is currently in jail.
Ta Mok was jailed in March 1999 pending an international trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders.
Under Cambodian law people can only be detained for three years without trial.
The move is the strongest indication yet that a trial of former leaders will not be held before March 2002.
Hun Sen had previously indicated that a trial would be underway by the end of 2001.
Laws to prosecute senior figures from the Khmer Rouge government were promulgated in August.
