Violence in Sri Lanka leading up to poll

Sri Lankan police have called in army reinforcements and ordered indefinite curfews in north-central Sri Lanka as election campaign-related attacks left one man dead and several others wounded.

Curfews were declared in three towns as suspected ruling party supporters went on the rampage and destroyed offices and a gasoline station owned by an opposition candidate.

Army officials say troops were called in to help the police reinforce various installations.

Sri Lankans go to the polls on Wednesday to elect a new parliament.
