US pounds al-Qaeda mountain hideouts, after fighters refuse to surrend

American B-52 bombers pounded Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan after they failed to meet a deadline to surrender or die.

After the deadline expired a second fruitless attempt was made to persuade the fighters to give up.

US-backed Afghan militia forces reported that the al-Qaeda fighters firmly refused to surrender before the Nangarhar provincial administration.

The forces say they are now "preparing for war".

The al-Qaeda fighters said they would only surrender in the presence of United Nations representatives and diplomats from their respective countries.

The Afghan militia forces say there are around one-thousand fighters still holed-up in the mountains.
