stage continuous bombing raids on al-Qaeda fighters in eastern Afghani

American officials say US warplanes have staged continuous bombing raids on the mountain hideouts of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters, in eastern Afghanistan, after they failed to meet a deadline to surrender.

Even after the deadline expired, US-backed Afghan militiamen besieging the fighters made a second attempt to persuade them to quit up their eastern mountain stronghold, but failed.

The fighters said they would only surrender to United Nations officials.

The militias are now preparing for renewed war.

Just 50 minutes after the deadline had passed, B-52 bombers carried out the first raids.

US coalition spokesman Kenton Keith says there is no question of anything short of an unconditional surrender.
