U-S aircraft continue bombing al-Qaeda positions in east Afghanistan U-S aircraft are continuing to bomb al-Qaeda positions in eastern Afghanistan, despite a renewed offer from the Northern Alliance for enemy fighters to surrender. "The last stronghold of bin Laden's al-Qaeda movement is once more under attack. B-52's bombing the underground cave complex of Tora Bora and the forests to which some fighters have fled. The Northern Alliance commander, Hazrat Ali, says he will hold off ground attacks until later today if the fighters agree to give up their leaders, including Osama bin Laden. Surrender talks broke town on Tuesday after mainly foreign fighters rejected the same demand. Hundreds of Arab fighters are believed to have escaped into neighbouring Pakistan. The showdown may prove to be the last major battle of the current war. Afghanistan's nominal president, Burhanuddin Rabbani, has now pledged to respect the proposed new interim government despite being sidelined by the U-N brokered deal." 13/12/01 13:00:34 | ABC Radio Australia News
