Northern Alliance extends deadline for al-Qaeda fighters

The Northern Alliance in Afghanistan has extended a deadline for al-Qaeda fighters in the east of the country to surrender or face an all-out attack.

The new deadline is conditional on an agreement to give up Saudi extremist, Osama bin Laden and other senior al-Qaeda leaders, as Eric Campbell reports from, Kabul:

"The surrender talks, which began on Tuesday, broke down over Northern Alliance demands to hand over Osama bin Laden. The Alliance's regional commander, Hazrat Ali, has now given the mainly foreign fighters a chance to reconsider. But, in a satellite telephone interview with the ABC, he was pessimistic a peaceful outcome could be secured. Commander Ali, a former commrade of Osama bin Laden in the war against Soviet occupation, said it was possible he was still with the fighters. The United States has ignored the new deadline, launching air strikes on al-Qaeda postiions."
