First meeting of new cabinet in Afghanistan

Afghanistan's new government has held its first cabinet meeting to deal with the country's dire economic and security crisis.

Eric Campbell reports from Kabul.

Mr Karzai has also said US forces would be welcome to stay in Afghanistan as long as there are terrorist elements hiding out in the country.

A crowd of pro-government demonstrators marched through the streets of Kabul as the new government met to plot Afghanistan's reconstruction. There is enormous public support for the new regime but it has few assets to work with. The central bank is believed to be almost broke. The new leader Hamid Karzai has appealed for billions of dollars in international aid. 'There is really no area in which Afghanistan will not require assistance.'
