Thai police use tear gas at juvenile correction centre

Police in southern Thailand have used tear gas to break up a riot by hundreds of youths who smashed property and hurled molotov cocktails at a juvenile correction centre.

Officials say dozens of police and children were injured in the melee that broke out at the facility in Surat Thani province.

Newspaper reports said the riot started after a few dozen youngsters started demonstrating over strict regulations at the centre, as well as poor food and facilities

The Justice Minister has asked authorities to investigate the causes of the riot, and whether staff at the centre had maltreated the children.
