Indonesian consumer groups criticise huge fuel price hikes

Indonesian consumer groups say inflation will rise by as much as 40 percent, after the government announced hefty price rises for all oil products and fuels.

In an effort to cut the government's huge subsidy bill and ease the burden on its budget, all fuel prices are to go up on average by 22-per cent.

Kerosene - used by most households for cooking - will rise by 50-per cent.

The announcement has sparked demonstrations in several cities.

Tini Hadad from the Indonesian Consumers Group says Indonesians will not be able to cope with a big cost of living increase.

"It will raise up the rate of inflation. It could be 30 to 40 percent. From our experience before it's always like that. Fuel rises 10 percent, electricity raised 10 percent, but the price of the product will rise more than that - 20 percent, 30 percent, even 40 percent."
