Army officer and three policemen killed in Kashmir
An army officer and three policemen have been killed and four army soldiers injured in ambushes by separatist Muslim militants in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Police say the militants, equipped with AK rifles and grenades, ambushed army personnel when they were heading for a search-out operation at the village of Putshai in the northern district of Kupwara. They say an army captain died on the spot, while four other soldiers were injured in the surprise attack by the militants, who had taken positions behind trees and boulders.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, which took place in a stronghold of Hizbul Mujahedin, a pro-Pakistan group made up mostly of local Kashmiris.
