North Korean leader meets envoy from South
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has met with an envoy of South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung in a potentially vital breakthrough in negotiations between the rivals.
The envoy, Lim Dong-Won, handed over a letter from the South Korean leader during a dinner in Pyongyang, which called for peace on the Korean peninsula and inter-Korean reconciliation and cooperation.
The meeting followed tense low-level contacts on Thursday in which North Korean officials demanded South Korea's answer on who was responsible for tension on the peninsula.
Mr Lim arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday for a three-day visit aimed at reviving dialogue between the communist state and South Korea, the United States and Japan.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency also said there was "wide-ranging discussion" on what it called "the grave situation" on the Korean peninsula, for which it blamed South Korea and the United States.
