Afghanistan's battle of the caves intensifies
US warplanes are concentrating heavy bombing on the cave-riddled Tora Bora area of eastern Afghanistan, as the Afghan militia abandoned surrender negotiations with with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters. The Pentagon has vowed to continue the blitz until the 1,000 Arabs and other foreigners surrender or die.
Bin Laden and members of his al-Qaeda network are Washington's prime suspects in the September 11 terror attacks that left some 3,300 people dead.
It's not known whether bin Laden is still with the last of his men in the cave complex. Some 4,000 Pakistani troops have fanned out opposite Afghanistan's White Mountains to prevent his escape.
As the battle of the caves intensified, Afghanistan's designated interim leader Hamid Karzai arrived in Kabul to prepare for the transfer of power on December the 22nd.
