All six attackers of Indian Parliament killed by defenders

There's been a shootout between security forces and unidentified terrorists around a VIP entrance to the Indian parliament shortly after parliament adjourned for the day.

The government says all six attackers were killed after they entered the compound by climbing over the boundary wall.

Reporters at the scene say automatic weapons fire and explosions continued inside the compound for at least 30 minutes.

Six security personnel and one civilian have been killed and 25 people injured.

India's home minister Lal Krishna Advani, says security forces are on the highest state of alert and an inquiry will be held to find out the motives for the assault.

Indian MP, Renaka Chaudhry, has vowed retaliation.

"This will only strengthen our resolve. An attack on parliaent is an attack on India's sovereignty and this will not go uncombatted. Every Indian will strengthen his resolve to fight back. We do not bargain or negotiate with terrorists."
