There's been an armed attack on India's parliament

There's been a shootout between security forces and unidentified terrorists around a VIP entrance to the Indian parliament shortly after parliament adjourned for the day.

The government says all six attackers were killed after they entered the compound by climbing over the boundary wall.

Reporters at the scene say automatic weapons fire and explosions continued inside the compound for at least 30 minutes.

Six security personnel and one civilian have been killed and 25 people injured.

India's home minister Lal Krishna Advani, immediately vowed retribution, saying it will prove very costly for those who did it.

He says security forces are on the highest state of alert and an inquiry will be held to find out the motives for the assault.
