India's Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee says an armed assault on India's parliament will spur his nation onto a "do or die" battle with terrorists.
At least five gunmen launched an assault on India's parliament complex, triggering a shootout which left 12 dead, including the attackers.
The gunmen's identity has not been determined, but Home Minister L.K. Advani said teh attack was a "major conspiracy" to destabilise the country.
Mr Advani said an emergency cabinet session had now vowed to "liquidate terrorists and their sponsors" whoever and wherever they may be.
Officials and witnesses said the gunmen drove into the parliament complex in an official white Ambassador car -- displaying security stickers and with its siren blaring.
The AFP news agencty quotes witnesses as saying they then jumped from the car and, armed with AK-47s, grenades and plastic explosives made for the main VIP entrance to the parliament building itself, firing as they went.
