Philippines wants Malaysia to keep rebel leader over Christmas

Philippines President, Gloria Arroyo, wants Malaysia to keep detained Muslim leader Nur Misuari over Christmas before handing him back to the Philippines.

Misuari, a former separatist guerrilla leader, is facing rebellion charges for an armed revolt by his armed followers in the southern Philippines last month.

Malaysia's Prime Minister, Doctor Mahathir, has warned that he will deport Misuari to a third country if Manila declines to take him back, but gave no timetable.

Malaysian officials earlier told Manila that 60 year-old Misuari, who fled to the Malaysian state of Sabah and was detained for illegal entry three weeks ago, can only be detained until December 24.
