Corruption charges filed against Bangladesh's former PM
Corruption charges have been filed against Bangladesh's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed and six of her senior former cabinet colleagues in a move the opposition called "politically motivated". Separate cases were filed in Dhaka police stations by the government's anti-corruption bureau after the charges received required approval by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Sheikh Hasina's Awami League quickly issued a statement denouncing the charges, calling it a "manifestation of a political vendetta".
Sheikh Hasina is accused in two cases in which she is allegedly responsible for 122 million dollars in financial irregularities. In one case, Sheikh Hasina is accused of taking personal profit at the Treasury's expense in the purchase of eight Russian-made state-of-the-art MiG-29 jets.
In the second case, the former premier is accused of "misuse of power and embezzlement" in appointing a consultant firm to help develop an export production zone.
