Calls for release of Bangladeshi journalist

There have been calls in Bangladesh for the release of a senior columnist and campaigner who has been detained for alleged anti-state activities.

Shahriar Kabir, who was arrested on Thursday, had been filming and writing about alleged attacks on Bangladesh's minority Hindu population around last month's general election.

The government has denied that Hindus have been attacked.

The organisation, Reporters Sans Frontieres has written to the Bangladeshi Home Minister demanding Kabir's release.

The main opposition Awami League has called for a nationwide protest on Thursday.
