Efforts to ensure Madcow disease is removed from Japan's food chain
Japan's agriculture minister Tsutomu Takebe says the government will destroy 12,626 tonnes of beef from cattle slaughtered before a nationwide mad cow testing regime began in October.
The government bought the beef two months ago from worried domestic producers who had massive stocks of slaughtered cattle they could not put on the market before comprehensive testing of all animals killed for consumption began on October 18.
Since September, the government has confirmed three cases of the BSE germ in holstein dairy cows aged over five years old.
BSE is linked to a fatal brain wasting disease in humans which has killed about 100 people in Britain since the mid-1980s.
