NZ extends military peacekeeping presence in East Timor
New Zealand will maintain its peacekeeping battalion in East Timor until November next year. The decision to extend the troop presence in the territory by a further six months follows a request from the United Nations, which is administering the territory as it prepares for self-government.
New Zealand's Defence Minister, Mark Burton says the request is an acknowledgment of the "outstanding job" the country's servicemen and women have done in bringing peace and stability to the devastated border area of East Timor.
Mr Burton says New Zealand's military presence in the territory "will be significantly reduced" after November next year. But he says military advisers to help train the East Timor Defence Force will continue to be posted to the region beyond the battalion's withdrawal date.
