Bombay prepares for general strike
India's commercial capital Bombay - also known as Mumbai - is preparing for a total shutdown today, as trade unions hold a general strike.
South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports.
Trade union leaders are organising the general strike in protest against what they call the forces of globalisation, as Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's path of liberalising the Indian economy. Supporting the strike, Ubant?, Mumbai's powerful ultra hardlline Hindu Shiv Centre Party, an ally of Mr Vajpayee's BJP. Security forces will be on high alert. Whether or not violence erupts, India's commercial capital is expected to be brought to a virtual standstill. Jonathan Harley Mumbai.
